Garage Sale Makeover

On my way to the Michaels store I stumbled upon a massive garage sale and totally scored!! Well at least in my mind, my husband couldn’t quite wrap his head around the vision I had in my head. Let me backup a bit though… I found this super old and rusty storage cabinet that had detachable parts. A light bulb went off in my head, “I think I could make something cool out of this…” Haggled with the owner for a few minutes and was able to get the whole thing plus a rattan chair thrown in for a whopping $25. Heres what I was working with.

It needed some TLC for sure! My vision was to split it in half, paint it, and add a wood top to it. First step, Paint!

Next was to create the wood top. Headed over to my parents, where my dad is the master carpenter and we were able to cut all the wood and glue them together to create the top. We used Gorilla Glue, which is so nice to use because it dries within an hour and is really really strong! We also used clamps to secure the wood together as it dried. Once the glue had dried for the wood, then we glued it to the top of the cabinet. All that’s left after that was the stain, which I always love to use Golden Oak stain.

I knew I wanted to cover the glass with something as well so that you could hide away books, or whatever you wanted to store, so I went to Joann’s fabrics store and found one that I liked. After I cut it to the size I needed, I just used a hot glue gun and glued the fabric to the glass on the back.

After that I was done! And the best part about it, I only spent $40 for the whole thing! Here’s a little break down!

  • Cabinet - I bought two detachable parts and a rattan chair for a total of $25. So if you split that in three thats about $8 each. So i spent $8 on one of the cabinets, and I can even do all this to the other one!

  • Paint, Gorilla Glue, and Wood Stain- I already had from a previous projects!

  • Clamps - My lovely father had!

  • Wood - $25

  • Hot Glue Gun - $7

Total - $40!!!!
